Social Distancing: Ambassador Hushek spoke by phone today with Professor Kuel Maluil Jok, the Chairman of the Board of Agamlong National Daily Newspaper to better understand the closure of that newspaper.

Ambassador Hushek noted the importance of a free press for a healthy peace process which requires discussion, debate, and even dissent. Furthermore, information is the primary response worldwide to the current global COVID-19 pandemic. Newspapers play an important role – along with radio, television, social media, and face-to-face interactions – in promoting awareness of the ways that we all as individuals can help reduce the spread of this disease.

Professor Kuel Maluil Jok explained that the closure of Agamlong Newspaper is not consistent with either the Constitution of South Sudan or the Media Authority Law and Ambassdor Hushek congratulated the Agamlong staff for their courage.
