On the 2nd of January 2020, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, received an invitation letter from the Universal Peace Federation. He was invited to participate as a Distinguished Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker during the World Summit on Peace, Security and Human Development in Seoul, South Korea. He was to address the Opening Plenary of the current and former Heads of State and Government on the fourth of February 2020.
Given pressing matters related to the peace process in South Sudan and his mediation efforts to end the conflict in the Sudan, President Kiir delegated Hon. Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Presidential Advisor and Special Envoy, to represent him at this important summit.
Hon. Dr. Barnaba Marial and his accompanying team arrived in Seoul, South Korea on the evening of the 3rd of February 2020. The Summit was attended by 11,000 delegates at its peak from 170 countries and in attendance were 120 current and former Heads of state and governments or their representatives.
South Sudan’s representative, Hon. Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, was honored to address the Summit among the very few speakers. He spoke alongside Mother Moon, Ban Ke Moon, former UN SG, Olusogun Abasingo, former President of Nigeria, former Canadian Prime Minister and other prominent leaders.
In his address, Dr. Barnaba told the world leaders that South Sudan is stabilizing and that the R-ARCSS has enabled the country to experience measurable stability. Dr. Barnaba thanked the world, especially those who stood with the people of South Sudan during the liberation struggle and those whose contribution led to the independence of South Sudan. He apologized to the world leaders for what has happened in South Sudan and noted that it is part of the experience of being a new state. He invited the world leaders to stand in solidarity with the people of South Sudan as they march towards sustainable peace. He cautioned the world of the negative impact of sanctions on peace in the country. He concluded that the people and the government of South Sudan want peace not only in South Sudan, but in the region and the world, which is why South Sudan contributed to ending the longest conflict in Northern Uganda and it is now mediating to end various conflicts in Sudan.
Besides addressing the World Summit, Hon. Dr. Barnaba was also honored with the invitation to spent one day and one night at Mother Moon’s Palace along with 20 current and form Heads of State and Government. The next day prime, he was invited to attend a mass wedding of 6, 000 couples sponsored by mother Moon at Cheong Shim World Peace Center. At the end of the Summit, Hon. Dr. Barnaba was a Keynote Speaker at banquet organized for all the African delegates at Lotte Hotel.
