The Uganda basketball national governing body Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) has called up three South Sudanese basketball players into the Uganda Basketball national team (Silverbacks) set up on Thursday 23rd January 2020.
The players of South Sudan origin included Geoffrey Soro who plays for Cobra Sports Club of Juba, South Sudan and UCU Canons duo of David Deng Kongor and Titus Lual Odeke, due to their club engagements, Deng and Lual could not be part of the South Sudan Bright Stars Basketball national team for the Zone 5 group qualifiers in Kenya in January 2020.
According to the press release seen by KurraSports, FUBA has summoned the 14 man squad to the national team (Silverbacks) in preparations for the upcoming Afro Basketball Qualifiers that will happen in Alexandria Egypt from the 21st-23rd February 2020. And the practice is scheduled to kick start on the 24th of January 2020 at Gems Cambridge School
It should be noted both David Deng Kongor and Titus Lual Odeke took their club UCU Canons into the 7th series of the Uganda 2019/2020 Basketball finals against eventual winners City Oilers after losing the finals. The Canons, who came into the playoffs as number one seeding, proved that they were not going down without a fight when Titus Lual scored 11 points for UCU to trail by just a point, 26-27 at halftime. Isaiah Mabeny Ateer’s three-pointer at 7:36 in the third quarter tied the game before David Deng Kongor laid up to give UCU a lead.
It should go un noticed that a section of basketball players from South Sudan have been gracing up the Uganda Basketball League with Monoja and Isaiah Mabeny Ateer’s as some of the notable players. With yet to be confirmed news of South Sudan playing against a yet to be identified team for a Wild Card Qualifiers spot, the three could be a good addition into the Bright Stars team
Uganda is pooled in group B of the qualifiers alongside host Egypt, Morocco and the winner from Zone 3
